Colombo is the door. The island is the day trip.
What three hours in a tuk-tuk around the Fort and Pettah actually costs. Which taxi meets a three in the morning landing at Bandaranaike. Reviews of every tour you can book in Colombo and Negombo.
Airport, city, rock, jeep. The first four bookings of a Sri Lankan trip.
Most people land at night, spend a day in Colombo and then head inland. What each of those four moves costs, and what travellers who made them say.
01The landingAirPort CMB to Colombo (Private Taxi 24/7) Car, Van, MinibusBandaranaike is thirty kilometres north of the city and the bus is not running at 3am. A named driver at arrivals removes the only hard part of day one.
02The first morningPrivate Tuk-Tuk City Tour with All Entry FeesFort, Pettah, the sea wall at Galle Face and the temples in between, from the back of a tuk-tuk. Half a day and you have the shape of the city.
03The big day outSigiriya & Dambulla Day Tour with SafariSigiriya and the Dambulla caves in one run north. Leave Colombo before five, climb the rock while the stone is cool, sleep on the way home.
04The wildlife dayUdawalawe National Park: Elephant Safari with Expert GuideUdawalawe holds elephants year round and is closer than Yala. Dawn or late afternoon, in an open jeep, with a guide who knows the herds.
Colombo, Negombo, and everything a driver can reach before dinner.
Two bases on the west coast and the four inland runs people make from them. The city and the lagoon town, then the rock, the Tooth Temple, the ramparts at Galle and the tea country up the line.
Colombo is a tuk-tuk city. The only question is which three hours.
Nobody walks this city in the middle of the day and nobody enjoys the traffic from inside a car. The tuk-tuk is how Colombo is seen. Three ways to spend the ride, and what each one costs to board.
The tours travellers in Colombo book before anything else.
Every review on the site →A tuk-tuk driver with a following, an airport taxi that answers at 3am, a rock in the middle of the island. These carry more travellers than anything else here.

Sri Lanka runs on drivers. Hire one for an afternoon or for a fortnight.
There is no fast road between the places you came to see, and the trains that are worth taking only run one way. Almost everyone ends up in a car with somebody who knows the potholes. Day rates, week rates and the full round trips, priced honestly.

Bandaranaike is closer to Negombo than to Colombo. Plan the first hour.
Long-haul flights from Europe and the Gulf put you on the tarmac between one and five in the morning. Katunayake sits thirty kilometres north of the city and ten minutes from the Negombo beach strip, so the first decision of the trip is whether to drive south in the dark or sleep by the lagoon and start fresh.
What a day out of Colombo actually costs.
Every reviewed tour grouped by its per-person price. A good half of them cost less than a taxi to the airport at home.
Tuk-tuk city runs, temple mornings, street-food walks and the short transfers up and down the coast.
The full days: Sigiriya and Dambulla, Kandy and the Tooth Temple, Galle and the ramparts, a jeep in Udawalawe.

Three Sri Lankan days that only work off this coast.
Beaches and buffets happen everywhere. A train that climbs into tea country, a fifth-century palace on top of a rock, and a lagoon full of outrigger boats do not.

The Kandy to Ella train
The track was laid by the British to move tea down to the coast and it still runs at walking pace through the plantations above Hatton. Second-class seats are reserved and sell out well ahead; third class is unreserved, which is why people are hanging out of the doors in every photograph you have seen of it. The bridge at Nine Arch is a walk from Ella station, not a stop on the line.

The rock at Sigiriya
A king moved his capital onto a two-hundred-metre lump of magma, built a palace on the flat top and had the western face painted with women in gold. The frescoes are still there, sheltered under an overhang halfway up. It is about twelve hundred steps in open sun, which is the whole argument for leaving Colombo at five in the morning rather than eight.

The Negombo lagoon at dawn
The lagoon and the Dutch canal behind the beach are still worked by outrigger canoes and stake nets, and the crab and prawn boats come in around first light. Trips run at sunrise for the birds and the fishing, or in the late afternoon through the mangroves. It is fifteen minutes from the airport, which makes it the best thing to do on a morning you cannot leave the coast.

Four Sri Lankan bookings that will not wait for you.
Most of this country can be arranged the night before over a plate of rice and curry. These four run on reserved seats, park quotas, migration and a flight schedule that lands you at an awkward hour.
- 01Efficient Airport Taxi: Colombo Airport to City Transfer, Safe & Comfortabe RideLong-haul arrivals land between one and five in the morning. Book the car before you fly and somebody is holding a card in arrivals instead of you negotiating at the rank.
- 02Sigiriya & Dambulla Day Tour with SafariEntry is capped and the queue at the lion paw builds fast once the coach groups arrive. An early start is the difference between climbing in shade and climbing at forty degrees.
- 03Colombo/Bentota/Kalutara/Ahungalla: Yala Safari TourBlock one runs on a jeep quota and closes for drought most Septembers. The dawn slot is the one with the leopards, and it goes first.
- 042-Day Whale Watching & Southern Sri Lanka TourThe boats out of Mirissa run roughly November to April, and only on a calm sea. Outside the season there is nothing to book at any price.
The southwest monsoon parks over Colombo from May to September.
It rarely rains all day. It rains hard, for an hour, usually in the afternoon, and the streets flood while it does. The answer is the same every time: do the outdoor thing in the morning and be under a roof by two. Kitchens, tea rooms, temples and the covered markets of Pettah all work in a downpour.
By place: the coast, then the road inland
By kind of day: tuk-tuk, jeep, kitchen or car
Colombo, Sigiriya, Kandy, Ella, Galle: the circuit almost everybody drives first.
